It’s beginning to really feel like Springtime in March. You would expect the produce to begin to be plentiful. That is not the case. The ground is still very cold, and many of the winter vegetables are going out of season at this time. March is just not the best time to get great produce.
Here is a list of the fruits and veggies that are still in-season:
- Artichokes
- Asparagus

- Avocado
- Chicory (looks similar to endive)
- Chives
- Dandelion Greens
- Endive
- Garlic
- Grapefruit
- Greens
- Horseradish
- Kiwi
- Limes
- Leeks
- Lettuce
- Oranges
- Parsnips
- Peas
- Purple Broccoli–yes, it does exist!
- Rhubarb
- Scallions
- Shallots
I saw endive at Trader Joe’s the other week, and I wanted to make something with it, but was not sure what. Here are some recipes I may try out:
- Endive Stuffed with Goat Cheese and Walnuts (Cooking Light)
- Apple and Endive Salad with Walnuts (Sacramento Mag)
- Avocado, Shrimp, Endive Salad (Whole Living)
- Endive with Chipotle Creams Cheese (Weight Watchers)
- Endive with Curried Chicken Salad (Chef 2 Chef)
- Endive leaves would make perfect scoops for Asian Lettuce Cups
- Or, use the leaves to scoop up hummus!

I’ve seen purple broccoli before, but never tried it. Does it taste like regular broccoli? Going to have to look for some…
