Healthy Movie Theater Snacks

Mysterious movie theater popcorn. Even though many theaters have made changes to cook with canola oil and get rid of the partially hydrogenated oils (unhealthy trans fats), movie theater popcorn can not possibly be healthy. Right?

First, I like to know exactly what I am eating. The fact that the information is scarce is a red flag. If they are not willing to display the ingredients, it makes me think the popcorn is still unhealthy. You have to call or write to your local theater to find out the ingredients, and then, if you state you have an allergy or food intolerance, they will tell you what you need to know.

Seriously? They tell you the calories (as if that is supposed to help you figure out if it is “healthy”), but not the ingredients.

Anyway, all that I know is some movie popcorn might still have trans fat, and if it doesn’t, then it probably still contains plenty of byproducts: likely MSG and/or diacetyl. You may remember when diacetyl was in the news for possibly causing lung disease and/or Alzheimer’s. However, this study was done on the workers in the popcorn factory.

Conclusion: I still do not eat movie theater popcorn because I don’t trust it, and there are plenty of other healthy options.

The AMC theater that I went to sold all kinds of healthier alternatives including hummus, fruit chips, pop chips, and Odwalla bars:

My sister got this teeny tiny pack of chocolate raisins (yes, a slightly healthier choice). Good for portion control, but bad for the wallet ;-)

movie candy

I still did not purchase any of these “healthier” choices. I snuck in my own popcorn. Sorry, but I don’t like the movie theater choices ;-)

I brought in this white cheddar popcorn:

The ingredients are very simple: popcorn, canola oil, whey, maltodextrin, cheeses, salt.

Mr. Cyclist thought I was ridiculous sneaking this in, but then he did enjoy it as well.

My little brother, who is not little anymore at all (he is 6’3″ tall), turned 17. This makes me feel old. I know that is silly. I still decorated a cookie cake kid style just to make myself feel even younger.

Dinosaurs vs. toy soldiers. Haha. Everyone got a kick out of it. Not healthy, but at least Psycho Holiday Baker made it from scratch.

For dinner, Dad made some awesome salmon “burgers” made from fresh salmon. They were delicious! And much more nutritious.

Since I ate leftover turkey lettuce wraps at 3 pm, and we snacked on brown rice crackers and cheese before dinner, I just ate a small salmon burger with a bed of lettuce.

Of course, Danny would not be eating salmon on his birthday. This is the unhealthy version of the birthday dinner night:

Anyway, tomorrow I will probably go out for a run to burn off the buttery sugary cookie cake. Going to be beautiful weather here in Atlanta. A nice break from the nasty, cold and wet weather we had all this week.

Tomorrow I will have my guacamole quinoa recipe posted!

I try to be pretty good about bringing my lunch to work everyday. Even if I don’t bring all the food I need for work, I at least bring part of my lunch or snacks to get me through the day.
Sometimes I just throw together whatever we have in the fridge. Green, beans, olives, cucumbers, a little cheese, and a vinaigrette.

If I don’t bring lunch from home, I at least plan what I will buy. This time it was this amazing salad from Trader Joe’s:
It had this delicious carrot orange ginger dressing that I want to try to recreate. The whole thing with the dressing was about 400 calories. Amazingly tasty and healthy.

Anyway, so I do a pretty good job of eating healthy throughout the day and packing healthy lunches. But, then, dinner who knows what can happen. For the most part, we eat healthy. But, there is the occasional deviation from the mean.

Mr. Cyclist was in India recently for about 2 months, so we wanted to try some more authentic Indian food. The dishes are so incredibly rich. Most made with a large amount of butter, or if not butter, probably some kind of heavy cream. On top of that, there is a lot of white rice and white bread. And probably more oil to cook the paneer and other ingredients. I ate about 7 bites, and felt pretty full (because the meal was heavier). So, this makes Indian food not my favorite. It was tasty, but not for me.

This past week, we also made a yellow squash dish sauteed with caramelized onions, and some thyme. I added some romano cheese to the top of mine.
What you see in the background is mixed seafood (calamari, shrimp, scallops) that has been coated with corn meal and then sauteed (with more oil than usual in order to get them crispy).

So, next week, the focus is to eat more healthy dinners since there has been a slight deviation. Perhaps this is the fault of the Costco avocados. When you give a mouse an avocado, he’ll want more chips… haha.

Have a good rest of the weekend!

Slim Jims are on the top of my list as some of worst foods (health-wise) that you can possibly eat. Processed, nitrite-filled meat product=terrible for health.

Anyway, we had a fun tubing day for Father’s Day.
And my Dad and brother insisted the day called for some Slim Jims.

They insisted that they only eat Slim Jims about 5 times total per year, so it was OK. What I was more bothered by was the Race Track convenient store we stopped at. It was the biggest gas station store I have ever been in. Packed with all kinds of processed junk foods. Pretty much a dietitian’s nightmare.
The good thing is that these mega convenient stores usually carry some fruit cups, fresh fruit, nuts, trail mixes, and carrot sticks. The problem is you just have to stay focused and go straight to the healthy choice.

I decided to go with some pretty plain coffee… it took will power to avoid the mega wall of froyo aka yogurt sugar food.
When we got home, Psycho Holiday Baker was at it again. This time, she was cooking an amazing Father’s Day feast.
Homemade empanadas which she said took her 2 hours to make! Very filling and impressive, but not so healthy.
Shrimp pasta and chicken pasta all Italian style for dinner:
These cute and tasty desserts:
Mason jars filled with angel food cake, strawberries, lemon juice, blueberries, homemade whipped cream, and toasted coconut. They were a big hit! And a light, healthy dessert option.
Have a good week!

Find #1:
Stopped and ate at the Marietta Diner this past week, and it was delicious. I loved it because it reminded me of a true diner from the North even though it is in Georgia.
They have a huge display of cakes, cookies, pies, anything you could possibly imagine. And their portions of everything are massive–probably 3 times what you really need.
I got an egg salad platter with all kinds of other mayo-based goodies on the plate. Mr. Cyclist got a Reuben–my nemesis because it makes my taste buds cry. I hate all the flavors of a Reuben. And it is not very healthy, so that’s alright with me.
But, the onions rings looked pretty tasty. Most important thing in this case is moderation and portion control :)

Find #2:
Mr. Cyclist decided to eat a Chick-fil-a ice-dream with a side of red curry sauce. So weird.
I don’t even have words to explain it. Except, I guess that is why creamy coconut milk goes so well in curry.

Find #3:
Saved the best for last. A pop-tart holder so you don’t let that second pop-tart go stale–like it would! Those things are so loaded with preservatives, they would never get old.
A co-worker brought this in to work, and I didn’t know what to think. It was so cute, but so horribly wrong. These things should not exist. I would rather see a holder for apple slices or baby carrots. Not trans-fat laden pop tarts!

Happy Friday! For more funnies, go to fail blog for nutrition failures.

Time to think about the healthy things of the week like starting a new exercise class and eating plenty of salmon…
