Quarter Century

May 14th, 2011 | Posted by Nicole in Miscellaneous - (0 Comments)

On Friday the 13th, I turned a quarter century old. The week before I was starting to feel old, and thinking about where I am in my life. And then, I remembered, I am only 25–it’s not like I was turning 50 or 75! No need to have a quarter life crisis.

When I went to work, my coworkers were so sweet, and surprised me with mini cupcakes.

So nice. And they thought about portion control!

For dinner, we went out to Eclipse de Luna, a tapas restaurant. We got calamari, olives, nuts, various salads, a cheese plate, mussels, shrimp, and wine!

Oh yeah, and I got a new camera! Finally! Nothing too fancy, but a million times better than the old camera I had before. It’s a Canon PowerShot ELPH 500 and looks like this:

I will now have better pictures for blogging :)

UPDATE (10/23/11): I actually saw this movie, and need to let everyone know about the portrayal of Dietitian’s and the ADA in the movie. Forks Over Knives negatively portrays us. They show interviews, and explain that the ADA and Dietitian’s get money from big companies like Coke and Hershey’s. This is true, but only a small percentage work for those big businesses. And even those that do, are not necessarily doing “bad” or anything that could impact health negatively.

Anyone who is a Registered Dietitian has a goal of trying to improve the health of a population through nutrition. We are not going to tell you the best food is processed food that appears healthy. Not at all. I can not speak for everyone, but I am just trying to get this straight.

Food for thought: Doctors get money from pharmaceutical companies all the time. Probably even more so than Dietitians get money from food companies. Do we need to really be pushing those medications?

For example, the only free food I ever received was Cabot Cheeses, and a few granola bars. No money. Now, what about those doctors who receive much more money, and may be persuaded to give you those pills with all those side effects by the drug company? Ever thought about that? The Dietitians are the ones doing much more good than harm.

Looking for something to do for free on a Monday night? Forks Over Knives movie will premier May 20th, but I am giving away 2 free tickets per winner (total of 15 winners!) to the screening in Atlanta on May 16th at Landmark Midtown Arts Cinema.

You can view the trailer here.

The film looks interesting, almost in the same category as Food Inc. I am always up for seeing the latest food or nutrition related flick!

View the trailer to get a good idea about what it is about. Mainly, they talk about the failings of the Western diet, and its evolution. I don’t know a great deal about it because I haven’t seen the movie yet, but it seems like a film I may support.

Two Ways to Enter to Win:

1. Comment on this post, and give your e-mail address. If you win, you will be given a coupon code to redeem your passes.
2. Message about this event on twitter, and mention me @Chicknik. And say you want to enter the contest.

You have until Monday, May 2nd to enter. Winners will be drawn Monday night. Please remember: only enter if you live in the Atlanta area!

Health Food of the Month: April

April 1st, 2011 | Posted by Nicole in Miscellaneous - (1 Comments)

Processed, high in saturated fat, with trans fat, and more. If you go to their website, I wasn’t even able to find a full ingredient list.

JUST KIDDING! APRIL FOOLS!

Totally non-nutrition topic. But, it got me cracking up just thinking about these things. It all started when I found Allen keys or whatever the heck they are called on the bathroom floor. It’s blog worthy because I think a lot of people can relate.

  1. Stock up on Febreeze. Their shoes always smell, and if you live in a small space, the shoes will become the apartment’s fragrance.
  2. Stock up on scented candles. They mask other smelly boy stuff, and help you feel a little more romantic and human.
  3. When they tell you that you are wrong, or that you are bad at sharing spaces, just say, “OK, you are right, I will do better next time”. Trust me–it’s worth it (for the small stuff anyway).
  4. The longer you live with the man, the more his stuff will start to overflow into the living space. And your clothing will start to overflow into his closet space.
  5. Let the man do some cleaning, or he never will again.
  6. You will find random things like tools in unexpected places like the bathroom.
  7. Just because you live together doesn’t mean you will spend more quality time with each other. You need to make time.
  8. Be nice and paint your nails while he is away. Men hate the smell of nail polish and will remind you of this every time you paint your nails. To them, it is as bad as their dirty shoes are to you.
  9. Be realistic. You can’t expect that a man (or anyone) will change. If he left hairs and toothpaste all over the bathroom vanity at his place, there will still be hairs and toothpaste on your communal bathroom. But, probably less if you clean it. So, take a good look at how he lives before you live together because that is what it will be like.
  10. The only nutrition tip: eat about 50-70% of what he eats. Since you are living together, you will be sharing more meals together. Do not match him calorie for calorie or you will wonder why you gained weight at the end of the month.

Living together is not full of negative things–well, it depends on the person. But, I had a hard time coming up with these pointers so, there can be a lot of good as well. Coming home to someone is nice, and sharing meals together is like a mini date (as long as you don’t ignore each other). And if you’re having a bad day, or a great day, you have someone to talk about it with.

Anyway, I would love to hear any other tips people have or things they wish they knew before living together.

Kitchen Table Makeover

January 25th, 2011 | Posted by Nicole in Miscellaneous - (2 Comments)

So, this is a totally non-nutrition related post. But, I felt it worthy enough to share. I was tired of eating at a boring looking table and chairs. The chairs are wicker, and didn’t look stylish at all.

BEFORE:

Sorry for the bad picture. It’s from 2 Christmases ago.

Not very inviting to come eat dinner at that table. In fact, we barely eat at the table. As a side note: about 93% of Americans eat in front of the TV which is a contributor to weight gain. So, part of me figured if I made a pretty new table it would be inviting to come eat our meals there. Mostly, I just wanted a new craft project.

AFTER:

There is still one chair in the corner that I was working on.

I spent about 1.5 days working on this. The table and chairs originally cost me $60 from craigslist, and the supplies to make it pretty cost about $46. What a deal! $106 spent total on a fancy new table and chairs that would normally cost at least $500.

Materials Used:

  • High gloss espresso brown paint (I was going to stain it, but the finish on the wood wouldn’t sand down very well). ($11)
  • Paint brush ($4).
  • Batting to cover the wicker ($10-11).
  • Fabric (about 2.5 yards–I got extra if I need to re-upholster a chair). (~$20)
